Harassment, Sexual Orientation and Public Policy

There have been a number of very sad stories appearing in the news about bullying and harassment of youth based on their sexual orientation. The first widely publicized case from 2008 about a teen killed because of sexual orientation-related bullying was Lawrence King. Lawrence was shot by a classmate after being bullied the day before […]

Same Sex Marriage Rulings - What a Week!

First, we had Iowa. The Kinsey Institute's neighbors to the east overturned a previous ruling banning gay/same-sex marriage on April 4th in a unanimous verdict from the Iowa Supreme Court. The Internet buzzed with chatter on both sides of the debate but granting legal rights to citizens of the United States around marriage seems […]

This online television show came to my attention back in March but I totally forgot to blog about it. The show is centered around a polyamorous triad (three people; in this case two men both in a relationship with the same women). The show is made by Seattle filmmaker Terisa Greenan who posts the short webisodes […]

Although people frequently ask us about the Kinsey Scale, it is receiving more attention now given its recent mention on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
The Kinsey Scale was developed by Dr. Alfred Kinsey and his colleagues in the 1940s and first published in their groundbreaking book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. Though originally called the […]

“Gayface”?

This semester I'm a discussion leader for a Human Sexuality class, and yesterday we had a GLBT panel discussion. One of the questions some of the students were curious about pertained to "gaydar", or how to tell if a person is gay or straight just by looking at them. One student said that some people […]

What Do Women Want? The NY Times isn’t sure.

This week's Sunday edition of the New York Times featured an article titled "What Do Women Want?" which attempts, and in my opinion fails for a variety of reasons, to explain the complexity that is female desire (and arousal, but we'll get to that). I was directed to the article because it features quotes […]

Can Sex & Religion Mix?

Most people believe in some form of higher power, belong to a house of worship (church, mosque, synagogue, etc), or practice their own forms of spirituality. It makes sense then to educate those […]
